Research & Facilities

In this program, you will have access to classes and research labs in both the College of Science and Technology and the College of Liberal Arts.   

  • Temple’s Spatial Analytics Lab in geography and urban studies supports research and education in geographical information sciences. The lab provides spatial analytic services to Temple faculty, nonprofit organizations and government agencies and offers valuable internship opportunities throughout the year to students. 

  • The Ambler Field Station has research facilities in solar energy and agrivoltaics, biodiversity and forestry. 

  • Additional research facilities are located in Temple’s Biology-Life Sciences Building, Beury Hall, and the Science Education and Research Center (SERC) for the Biology and Earth and Environmental Science departments and in Gladfelter Hall for the Department of Geography and Urban Studies

Research Centers & Institutes 

Several related research centers and institutes are housed at Temple University.

  • The Center for Sustainability conducts integrated social and environmental research on natural, technological and socioeconomic systems to address the challenges of sustainability. 

  • The Center for Biodiversity is involved in the research, education and conservation of species. 

  • The Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology is where researchers conduct theoretical and experimental research into defining problems in structural biology, molecular recognition and the evolution of proteins. 

  • The Sbarro Health Research Organization is a center where researchers investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease, cancer and other illnesses to find cures. 

  • Housed within the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, the Center for Asian Health seeks to reduce health disparities and improve health equity among underserved Asian Pacific Americans and other diverse health disparity populations.  

  • The Center for the Humanities at Temple is an interdisciplinary forum for scholarship and intellectual inquiry in the humanities, intended to bridge the disciplinary divide between departments and colleges. 

  • The Public Policy Lab is home to researchers who study public policies and the social processes relevant to their development and consequences. 

  • The Temple University Brain Research and Imaging Center is an interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the study of neurological biology and behavior.  

  • The University Community Collaborative prepares and supports youth and young adults to become confident, effective leaders, and it creates cultures that value and integrate the contributions of youth with the goal of building stronger communities. 

Research Funding

In 2016, the National Science Foundation placed Temple University among the top 100 in terms of research expenditures, which amounted to $242 million. Learn more about the university’s research support efforts.

Carnegie Classification

In 2016, Temple was elevated to an R1 institution of “highest research activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, placing it in the top 4% of all four-year educational institutions in the nation. Temple’s research enterprise distinguishes itself through its focus on community, and using advances in technology to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
